Vertigo testing is an essential part of ensuring that individuals who work on height structures are not at risk due to balance or dizziness issues. Workers on heights need to be confident in their physical abilities to avoid accidents. Vertigo, which causes a sensation of dizziness or spinning, can be dangerous, particularly when working at significant heights where balance is critical. Here are some of the common vertigo tests and considerations that could be used to assess fitness for working at height:

1. Dix-Hallpike Test (for Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo - BPPV)
  • Purpose: This test helps diagnose benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV), which is a common cause of vertigo. BPPV causes brief episodes of dizziness triggered by specific head movements.
  • Procedure: The individual sits with legs extended, then quickly moves to a lying position with the head tilted 45 degrees toward one side. The doctor observes the patient's eye movements (nystagmus) and listens for signs of dizziness.
  • Significance for height work: If a person tests positive for BPPV, it suggests they may experience dizziness when changing head positions, which could be dangerous when working at heights.
